Mathematics is often described by mathematicians as the poetry of logical ideas. At Deer Park North P.S., we believe that a mathematics program is process driven, where lessons are designed so that students might discuss their strategies for solving a problem, explaining not only what they did, but also the reasoning behind their work. This ‘maths talk’ approach provides students the opportunity to describe their methods to another person and in doing so they can clarify their own thinking as well as clarify the matter for others. Another person's approach can provide a new perspective, and assist all children to become both flexible thinkers and creative problem solvers.
Our lessons are designed to offer different entry points for students, as well as providing authentic learning experiences. Using open-ended problems to facilitate discussion enables our students to demonstrate effective use of the four mathematical proficiencies- fluency, problem solving, reasoning and understanding.
