At Deer Park North P.S., students are involved in an Auslan program that provides opportunities to practise and meaningfully use the language, whilst encouraging the understanding of deaf culture. The Auslan program teaches students how to communicate using sign language through the use of games, songs, digital technology and puppetry. Beginning in Foundation, the children learn basic signs such as numbers, colours, animals and fingerspelling letters. They also learn and understand the importance of using expression. Each year new signs are introduced and the students are able to sign stories and short texts using visual gestures.
